Interlock device

Interlock devices

AA interlock device or kit is a combination of three parts that allow the use of a portable generator to safely be hooked to your home. The first part is the interlock, this physically locks out your breaker box main breaker when your generator is on. The second part is a cord that goes from your generator to the third part which is called an inlet. The inlet allows the power in to your breaker box.

Things to consider when considering and interlock

There are a number of different size portable generators and generally two sizes of interlock kits, 30-amp and 50-amp. Our experts will know which size interlock you need by sizing it with your generator. All of our kits come with a cord.

Transfer switches for portable generators

What if I want a transfer switch instead of an interlock kit? A manual transfer switch for a portable generator requires that up two six circuits be moved from your breaker box to the transfer switch. In addition to the transfer switch you will also need a cord. The transfer switch is limited to a maximum of 30-amps and six circuits unlike the interlock kit. In some cases this is the only way to go. These cases typically are due to the age of the breaker box when an interlock device is not available for that brand panel.
